I spent a wonderful week with family starting with a tour of t he San Francisco Saturday Farmers’ Market at the Ferry Building. The variety of fresh, beautiful produce is far greater than what we find here in Austin. Son Jake says this is a year-round phenomenon!
Naturally, we ate well and local at several SF restaurants, including Skool and RN74.
Then it was on to Oregon, up to the Columbia Gorge and through the “Fruit Loop” where more farmstands abounded, and alpacas are raised for their wool. We ended in the Willamette Valley, where most of the Pinot Noir grapes are grown and wine production is the main industry.
The synergy between grower and consumer is intimate here. One is never far from one’s food source, which is fresh, usually organic and always accompanied by a welcome smile!
